Within the International Decade for People of African Descent, decreed by the United Nations for 2015–2024, in an unprecedented event in the history of humanity, a Colombian Afro-descendant community made the first public, worldwide proclamation about a Spanish city.
By virtue of the legacy and mandate of a mysterious revelation made manifest for all humanity in 1992, exactly five hundred years after the encounter between two worlds.
Context
The International Decade for People of African Descent (2015–2024), proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/68/237, seeks to highlight the historical, cultural, and spiritual contributions of Afro-descendant populations, as well as to promote their inclusion, development, and justice.
Within this global framework, various communities have carried out symbolic acts that express their deep bond with the history, spirituality, and future of Afro-descendant peoples. One such act took place in Colombia, with symbolic repercussions in Spain.
The Act of December 21, 2022
On December 21, 2022, in the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia— a key city in the history of the African diaspora in Latin America— the first Afro-descendant proclamation in history about a European city was made.
During the ceremony, a Colombian Afro-descendant community publicly declared the city of Toledo, Spain, as the “New Jerusalem.” This proclamation was based on a mysterious revelation unveiled in 1992 in the city of Toledo, Spain, coinciding with the last commemoration of the second millennium of the 500 years of the discovery of America. According to its bearers, this revelation constitutes a serious warning for humanity, which is unquestionable according to its signs and secret numerical codes, in favor of a timely global reflection.
Significance and Symbolism
The proclamation represents:
A spiritual and prophetic act that establishes a bridge between Africa, the Americas, and Europe in a key of redemption.
A historical re-signification that turns places marked by pain and slavery into symbols of hope and a new covenant.
A universal declaration that recognizes Toledo as a spiritual city for the Afro-descendant diaspora, just as Jerusalem is for other traditions.
Scope and Impact
This event has been considered unprecedented in the history of humanity, as it constitutes the first public, collective gesture in which an Afro-descendant community, from the Americas, proclaims a spiritual and symbolic bond with a Spanish city.
Since it took place, the act has prompted academic, spiritual, and social reflections on the memory of the African diaspora, the role of historic cities in processes of symbolic reparation, and the spiritual leadership of Afro-descendant communities in the contemporary world.
